When I was in secondary school, almost every week my teacher will bring me to bookstore, and she will buy me books, knowing I would not be able to buy most of it (especially for the book she has chosen for me). We often goes to islamic independent bookstores, those which never existed anymore.
I developed an intimate bond with her and books. Until today, it felt surreal that @imanshoppe_official happens because of those moments I had with her. If she had helped me find my ways in life with books that she curated for me, I need to help others find the books in order to find their ways in life too.
At the beginning, I was responsible in selections of books, getting the books from suppliers in Indonesia ( I begin my Islamic reading with Indonesian books), before we emerge with our own contents, knowing what the readers wants. Thats how @imanpublication was born.
I regards my journey in entrepreneurship in books as accidental. I never thought about it before. It felt like a calling to me; my friends needed a job, I have passion in influencing people through writing and books, the opportunity just appear when we start looking, and the support is there; people who confident in me to start it, though they are not here anymore to go through the process. IMAN has always been a work by many peoples life and I felt grateful to bring all of them together so it can still stand till today. Our backend revenue is now 93% compare to our front end (the bookstore) itself.
Covid-19 has been super tough for all of us especially business owner. But it brings litmus test for us to know how much potential we have as a team. It tests how fast and agile can we navigate in uncertainty in order for us to continue growing. Our next step is to go deeper and wider in digital bookstore ecommerce, before we expand in retail bookstore after the pandemic ends. My wish is people able to find their books in our website and come to bookstore for the experience. My next big dream is to open @imanshoppe_official at the heart of kuala lumpur, KLCC and make it sustainable. Insyaallah. One day. One at a time.
